Wellness & Vaccines

We know you love your pet,  and want to give them what they need - Wildflower understands,  and wants to help!  We also understand that every animal is different, and needs to be managed as an individual.  That's where Wildflower's one-on-one personalized care makes all the difference in the world.

Adult wellness care (for animals older than 1 year) is extremely important - even though many of our animals stop seeing the vet as regularly after their kitten or puppy visits.  Typically, we think of our companion animals as young adults (1 year to 7 years), and senior adults (7+ years).  For each life stage, we recommend an annual or semi-annual visit with vaccinations and screenings based on their personalized needs.

What are the key components of your annual or semi-annual visit?
  1. A comprehensive exam done by a trained veterinarian will identify health concerns, and is the basis for assessing the need for prevention, diagnosis of diseases, and management of health concerns.  Although we often overlook the value of the exam, this is the most important thing your veterinarian can do to help partner with you in care.
  2. A wellness plan will be developed from the exam findings, your life style and habits, and specific needs you animal may have.  Wildflower knows that empowering families to know what is needed,  and helping them plan for treatment costs through transparency results in less stress for all involved.  It also allows us to provide better care for your loved one,  while minimizing extra costs.
  3. Vaccinations will be given based on age, life style needs, and exposure risk to preventable diseases.  The underlying health of your animal affects the vaccines,  and may dictate that certain animals need a modified vaccination plan.  Only after spending time with your pet and completing a thorough examination should any veterinarian give vaccinations.
    1. Dogs:
      1. Rabies
      2. DAPP (Distemper-Parvo)
      3. Leptospirosis
      4. Bordetella
      5. Influenza (depending on lifestyle)
      6. Lyme (depending on lifestyle)
      7. Rattlesnake (depending on lifestyle)
    2. Cats:
      1. Rabies
      2. FVRCP (Feline distemper)
      3. Feline Leukemia (depending on lifestyle)
  4. Screening tests specific to the needs of your animal will be recommended.  General expectations for most animals would include an annual heartworm test and fecal screening as a minimum.  Depending on lifestage, health, and your healthcare goals, annual bloodwork is recommended in all adult animals,  and often semi-annually in senior pets.
  5. Heartworm & Flea Prevention will be discussed and specific recommendations made pertaining to your pet's health (some products have specific uses and contraindications).  Some families will need more coverage for certain types of ecotoparasites (like sand fleas, mosquitoes, or ticks).  In north Texas, all animals are at risk of contracting heartworm disease potentially year round.
  6. Training,  Behavioral Consult, & Environmental Assessments are often as important as the health of your pet.  Coming to your home, we can often observe issues or concerns as they happen, and may be able to help you decrease the stress of habits or behavior on the spot.  Seeing your animal in his or her own environment is often very different from their behavior in a hospital, and we can accurately assess how to be of assistance.
  7. Some Love!  (and a little positive reinforcement).  Allowing your little one to create a relationship with your pet's veterinarian is very important, and a slow and calm introduction reduces stress at that visit, and for all future visits.
